A proven track record
I & G Cohen Ltd has always been at the forefront of textile recycling in the UK. The company chairman, Elliot Cohen was the President of the Textile Recycling Association from 2000-2003. We were also founder members of Recyclatex, a group of companies formed to ensure a cost effective and reliable national textile recycling service is provided to local authorities, waste management companies and charities.

In 2003 the company won the Salford Exporters Excellence Award.

On 30th January 2005 two of the directors were profiled in an article focusing on successful family partnerships in business. The article appeared in the Independent on Sunday, Business Monthly and can viewed at:

The company is also on permanent exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry as part of its history of textiles and recycling in modern Britain.

History
I & G Cohen Ltd is a family business with long traditions in textile recycling. We were established in 1959 by Gerald Cohen and his father Israel in the Chorlton area of Manchester selling used clothing into the UK market. The company moved a year later to larger premises and has remained in Salford ever since.

Gerald’s son Elliot Cohen joined the company in 1975. This was a great source of pride in the family to have three generations working together. In 1984 a new building was found on Bazaar Street. We are still based at the Pendleton site employing over 30 people. The company experienced the economic highs and lows of the 1980’s and turned to international markets for growth.

A history of innovation
Prior to this the main markets were domestic. However, I & G Cohen Ltd pioneered the way to establishing end markets in the developing countries in Africa for good quality second hand clothing. We were one of the first companies involved from the UK, The company also began sorting our own textiles. In recent years there have been further changes to the used clothing market following the enlargement of the EU. The company has always adapted to change and consequently now also offers bespoke products to eastern Europe as well as Africa and Asia.
